Compost silt socks, or mulch socks are widely used here in New England and are accepted as an alternative to silt fence and hay bales in most cases either as a standalone product or in combination with silt fence. Mulch socks are based around a practice used in states like Maine to contain and filter water using large berms made of Erosion Control Mix. Using Compost or Mulch socks allows us to use less material in the berm and eliminate washout in the event the sock is overtopped This also makes restoration at the completion of a job easier. To insure these products, work as designed it is critical that the sock mesh and the fill material conform to specifications that allow for rapid flow of water while maximizing sediment removal.
